Modern military conditions demonstrate a radical transformation of social and professional roles. Women are increasingly involved in military service. They demonstrate the ability to perform tasks that were previously considered purely “male”. Women actively participate in combat and management tasks, and military teams are faced with the need to adapt to a more equal environment. Despite the relevance and diversity of gender issues in modern scientific discourse, a number of gender issues related to the security and defense sector remain unresolved. The aim of the article is to examine the nature of gender stereotypes in the military environment through a sociological analysis of the experience of higher education applicants.
The results of the study showed the persistence of persistent gender stereotypes in the environment of military institutions of higher education, which is manifested both in the attitude towards female leaders and in the definition of their professional and career prospects. Despite the gradual integration of women into the military and the generally positive attitude towards training in mixed groups, barriers continue to function in the educational environment, caused by both the prejudices of commanders and teachers and the limited opportunities for female cadets to implement leadership roles.
Analysis of the respondents’ responses revealed significant differences in the perception of the issue: female cadets more often demonstrate a willingness to develop leadership competencies and positively assess female command, while the traditional idea of the division of military functions by gender remains widespread among cadets. Such a gap in views indicates the need for targeted work to overcome stereotypes, in particular through gender education and the formation of practices of equal interaction in military teams. Effective overcoming of the identified barriers is possible provided that comprehensive measures are implemented, including: development of a gender-sensitive educational environment, support for female leadership, raising awareness of teaching and command staff on gender issues, as well as stimulating equal partnership between male and female cadets. Such an approach will contribute not only to reducing the impact of gender stereotypes, but also to the formation of a new military culture that meets modern challenges and is aimed at increasing the effectiveness of training future officers.
Key words: gender stereotypes, military personnel, educational environment, female leadership.
