The author of this article describes the role of the exercise method in the formation of language competence of future law enforcement specialists in the context of the academic discipline “Ukrainian Language and Fundamentals of Office Management”, which is normative and is included in the cycle of general training of the OPP for the first level of higher education 262 “Law enforcement activities” of the field of knowledge 26 “Civil security”.
It is proven that the exercise method in practical classes in the Ukrainian language for future law enforcement officers directly affects the formation of language competence, which involves knowledge by higher education students of language means, units and categories of all levels, as well as the rules by which language constructions are created, and the ability to apply such rules.
Based on the analysis of scientific works on linguodidactics, it was found that to date there is no single established classification of exercises in the Ukrainian language, since scientists base these classifications on different criteria. It is substantiated that for the effective formation of language competence, the exercise method requires skillful guidance from the teacher, which involves: motivating students, bringing to the consciousness of education seekers the purpose of performing certain actions, their established sequence; taking into account the conditions in which they occur; analyzing the features of performance, identifying the causes of errors made; searching for opportunities to improve skills and abilities, taking into account the individual achievements of each student. The effectiveness of the studied method for the formation of language competence also depends on the awareness of the students of the purpose and sequence of performing exercises. It is proven that the exercise method is aimed directly at the transformation of knowledge into skills and abilities, the formation of readiness in education seekers to perform practical tasks, as well as the development of reproductive and creative activity in different conditions. It is emphasized that the use of exercises involves the implementation of three interrelated stages, in particular: reproducing actions according to a model in order to consolidate them; applying learned actions in new conditions; performing creative exercises. The feasibility of using the exercise method in today’s realities is due to the possibility of their use in offline and online learning in higher education institutions.
Key words: exercise method, educational process, language competence, higher education students, practical training.
