Summary

The modern teacher has a wide methodological toolkit, in which the «storytelling» method occupies a worthy place among the variety of new teaching tools. The latter can be used in the process of teaching disciplines of both the social and legal sciences. The didactic potential of this method lies in the appropriate use by the teacher of information that illustrates the material being studied, through the story, for example, of a relevant story, in order to activate student attention, create additional interest.

However, the use of the «storytelling» method in the process of teaching historical, social, humanitarian and legal disciplines has not yet been sufficiently studied. The involvement of this method increases the chances, against the background of the discrediting of history as an object of manipulation and a tool of political propaganda, «to find and defend one’s own vision of the past… collective memory – as a way of democratic and protest living knowledge of the past – has acquired special significance».

The purpose of the article is to highlight the relevance and features of the «revival» of the topic of the history of the Holocaust in the humanitarian and legal disciplines taught at the Penitentiary Academy of Ukraine, using the «storytelling» method in the context of studying various aspects of the Holocaust topic in higher education.

The topic is becoming acutely relevant in the context of the Russian-Ukrainian war, the «storytelling» method is becoming especially relevant in the context of parallels between the stories of people who survived the tragedy of the Holocaust and the stories of those who have experience of occupation.

It consists in summarizing information about when, why and how in Ukrainian education and in the Penitentiary Academy of Ukraine in particular, the history of the tragedy of the Holocaust began to be studied and how the «storytelling» method increases the possibilities for revealing this topic.

The Penitentiary Academy of Ukraine is actively involved in studying the history of the tragedy of the Holocaust, preserving the memory of it, using the «storytelling» method. Activities using this method, held at the academy, actualize the importance of remembering the significant socio-economic contribution and unique cultural influences of the Jewish population on the socio-cultural environments of the city and the region, emphasize that Jewish history is part of the Ukrainian common history.

Key words: storytelling method, Holocaust, Jews, memory, Penitentiary Academy of Ukraine.
